South Sikkim is perhaps the least
visited part in Sikkim. Serene and nostalgic; a district
having unique countryside landscape dotted with Sikkimese
and
Lepcha villages on the rolling valleys. The endless
waves of agricultural field on the terraced slopes
intercepted by streams and patch forests are the landmark of
South Sikkim.
Simple lives of religious villagers,
some of the oldest monasteries, great scenic beauties and
tranquility of the region make it an integral part in Sikkim
for tourism perspective. South Sikkim can be an ideal
location for travelers looking for new destinations, which
are yet to be captured by the typical modern tourism
concept.
Tourism
infrastructures, although not comparable with star category
facilities available in modern towns, are fast developing
with basic and comfortable amenities. Namchi being the
district head quarter of South Sikkim is an important trade
center. The most important tourism destination in South
Sikkim that has been recently developed and thrown open to
the tourists is
Ravangla. Famous for its peaceful environment and
prominent view of snow-capped mountains of Khanchenjungha,
Ravangla is well connected by motorable road from
Gangtok (65 kms)
Namchi (32kms) and from
Siliguri (120kms).
Today, South Sikkim has grown into an
ideal destination for short trekking and hitchhiking. A
large number of western tourists who visits the place
testify to that. It also offers possibilities for adventure
sport lovers- in the form of rafting and kayaking in the
waters of Teesta and Rangeet. These and a flourishing
tourism industry make South Sikkim an exciting new
destination for tourists especially those with a disposable
income.
